XPS
Premium-quality Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) offering superior insulation performance. Also referred to as Styrofoam, Polystyrene Foam, and Thermocol – the go-to solution for robust, moisture-resistant, and highly energy-efficient applications!
Description
“Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is a rigid foam material known for its superior thermal insulation and strength. During production, polystyrene is melted and extruded through a die to form a continuous foam board with closed cells. This process results in a high-density, durable material that offers excellent moisture resistance and compressive strength. XPS is widely used in applications requiring reliable insulation and structural integrity, such as in construction and foundation systems.”
Application Area
Flat Board

- Passive House & Energy-Efficient Buildings – Ideal for high-performance insulation in low-energy and passive house designs.
- Roof Insulation – Used in flat and pitched roofs for improved heat retention.
- Floor Insulation – Suitable for underfloor heating systems and high-insulation flooring applications.
- Cold Storage & Refrigeration – Enhances energy efficiency in cold rooms and refrigeration units.
- Industrial & Commercial Buildings – Used in warehouses, factories, and offices for high thermal efficiency.
Rough Channel
- Perimeter Insulation – Provides enhanced moisture resistance and thermal protection around building perimeters.
- Ground Insulation – Ideal for insulating areas in direct contact with the ground, preventing heat loss and moisture buildup.
- Roof Insulation (Flat and Low-Slope Roofs) – Delivers effective thermal insulation while maintaining structural integrity.
- Underfloor Insulation – Ensures high-performance insulation in concrete floors, enhancing heat retention.
- Industrial & Commercial Applications – Used in demanding environments such as warehouses and factories to offer robust thermal insulation.
- Cold Storage & Refrigeration – Perfect for cold rooms and freezers, improving energy efficiency and temperature control.

- Superior Thermal Insulation – Provides excellent insulation with higher performance in extreme conditions compared to other materials.
Energy Efficiency – Helps significantly reduce heating and cooling costs, ensuring long-term energy savings.
High Compressive Strength – Ideal for use in load-bearing applications, offering robust support and durability.
Moisture Resistance – Resists water absorption, maintaining high thermal performance even in damp environments.
Long-Term Durability – Maintains its integrity over time, resisting wear, deterioration, and shrinkage.
Easy Installation – Simple to cut, shape, and install in various construction projects, saving time and labor costs.
Versatile Applications – Suitable for use in foundations, walls, roofs, floors, and industrial insulation.
Sustainable & Recyclable – Environmentally friendly and recyclable, helping reduce waste in construction projects.
XPS Flat Board is the premium option for consistent thermal insulation and smooth surfaces, while XPS Rough Channel provides added durability and moisture resistance for more rugged applications.
Fire Safety & Classification
1. Fire Behavior of Standard XPS
- Flammable Material – Standard XPS can ignite and burn when exposed to high temperatures.
- Melts & Shrinks Under Heat – Does not maintain structural integrity in fire conditions.
- Produces Smoke & Toxic Gases – Can release carbon monoxide and other harmful gases when burning.
- Requires Protective Covering – Must be covered with materials like plaster, cement, or fire-resistant boards for improved fire safety.
2. Fire-Retardant XPS (FR-XPS) Properties
- Self-Extinguishing (Flame-Retardant Additives) – Contains special additives that slow down ignition.
- Stops Burning Without External Flame – Once the flame source is removed, FR-XPS stops burning instead of spreading fire.
- Lower Smoke Production – Compared to standard XPS, it produces less smoke but still requires protective barriers in fire-sensitive areas.
3. Fire Classification of XPS (According to EN 13501-1 European Standard)
| XPS Type | Fire Class | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Standard XPS | E | Easily flammable, spreads fire, high smoke production. |
| Fire-Retardant XPS (FR-XPS) | B1/B2 (Depending on Composition) | B1: Hardly flammable (self-extinguishing), B2: Normally flammable but with delayed ignition. |
| XPS with Protective Coating | A2/B (With Fireproof Covering like Cement, Plaster, or Alu-Foil) | Non-combustible or very limited flammability when properly installed. |
4. Fire Safety Recommendations
- Always use FR-XPS (B1-rated) for construction to improve fire safety.
- Ensure proper installation with fire-resistant coatings such as plaster, cement, or fireproof cladding.
- Avoid exposing XPS directly to open flames or high heat sources to prevent ignition.
- Consider alternative non-combustible materials like Stone Wool for applications requiring high fire resistance.
XPS is widely used in construction, but for projects with strict fire safety requirements, fire-retardant versions or protective coverings are essential.
